What makes a six-method engine different
Most single-engine accessibility tools run only DOM analysis — typically axe-core or a similar rule-based checker. That catches roughly 30–40% of WCAG success criteria automatically. VPATify layers five additional methods on top: Vision AI spots low-contrast text that overlaps images, icons missing visible labels, and layout issues that DOM analysis cannot see because it operates on the HTML structure, not the rendered result. Keyboard simulation walks every interactive element in tab order, checking that focus is always visible, never trapped, and that custom widgets respond correctly to Arrow keys, Enter, and Escape. Screen reader simulation builds the full accessibility tree and checks that ARIA live regions, modal dialogs, and dynamic content announcements are correct. Cognitive analysis applies readability scoring, consistent-navigation checks, and error-identification heuristics from WCAG 3.x SC guidelines. Manual review flagging surfaces the remaining judgment calls — adequate audio descriptions, meaningful alt text quality, and language identification — with structured review guidance so a human reviewer can process them quickly.
The result is 80%+ automated WCAG 2.2 coverage across all 86 success criteria at levels A, AA, and AAA — substantially above the industry norm. The remaining ~20% are flagged for manual review with enough context that an accessibility specialist can complete them in a fraction of the time a cold manual audit would take.
VPAT 2.5 Rev — all four editions, one workflow
The VPAT 2.5 Rev template maintained by the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) is the current procurement standard. VPATify generates all four editions from a single scan result:
- WCAG 2.2 Edition: Maps every scan finding to a WCAG success criterion with a conformance level (Supports, Partially Supports, Does Not Support, or Not Applicable) and a remarks field.
- Section 508 Edition: Required for U.S. federal ICT procurement. The revised 508 standards (36 CFR Part 1194) incorporate WCAG 2.0 Level AA by reference. VPATify maps findings accordingly.
- EN 301 549 Edition: The harmonized European standard required under the European Accessibility Act (EAA). Organizations selling to EU public bodies or consumers need this edition.
- International Edition: A combined report covering all three frameworks, for vendors responding to mixed-jurisdiction procurement.
Once the VPAT is generated it exports as a formatted Word document (.docx) or PDF — the formats procurement teams actually accept. A shareable public ACR link is also available for organizations that prefer a URL to an attachment.
How VPATify compares
Manual audits are thorough but expensive and slow. Single-engine scanners are cheap but miss most WCAG criteria. VPATify sits in the middle: deep automated coverage that scales to your deploy cadence.
| Capability | VPATify | Manual audit | Single-engine scanner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free → $399/mo | $5,000 – $15,000 per audit | $0 – $50/mo |
| Turnaround | < 60 sec (quick) / minutes (deep) | 2 – 6 weeks | Seconds |
| WCAG 2.2 coverage | 80%+ automated (86 SC) | 100% with skilled auditor | 30 – 40% (DOM only) |
| VPAT 2.5 generation | Included — all 4 editions | Manual write-up ($) | Not included |
| Re-scan on every deploy | Scheduled scans, CI-ready | New contract required | Yes |
| Specialist access | Built-in marketplace | Is the specialist | None |
| Multi-site management | Up to 10 sites (Pro) | Per-site contracts | Varies |
Manual audit cost range based on industry surveys ($5k entry-level, $15k+ for large sites). WCAG coverage figures reflect automated detection only; manual review items are additional.
